About this scholarship
The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho/MEXT) Scholarship is one of the world’s most comprehensive fully-funded study-abroad programmes. Administered by Japanese embassies, it covers undergraduate, master’s, PhD and research student categories at any Japanese university. Recipients gain access to Japan’s top research institutions and a generous monthly stipend.
Eligibility
Citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
Undergraduate: typically under 25 years old at application
Master's/PhD (Research student): under 35 years old at application
Meet academic requirements (varies by category)
Willing to learn Japanese
Not currently receiving another Japanese government scholarship
Benefits & Coverage
Full tuition fees at any Japanese university
Monthly stipend: approximately ¥117,000 for undergraduates, ¥144,000 for master's, ¥145,000-¥147,000 for PhD
Round-trip economy airfare between home country and Japan
6 months of intensive Japanese language preparatory training (if needed)
No bond or service requirement after graduation
